SOME FACTORS THAT PREDISPOSE LGBT INDIVIDUALS TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE

    • Internalized homophobia can manifest as increased shame; negative self-concept, and marginalization can foster depression and anxiety, and make people vulnerable to re-victimizations.

    • LGBT people are often isolated and have historically socialized within bars, and especially for those who are newly coming out, or whom live in isolated communities, bars may the source of natural support (D'Augelli, 1996).

    • The coming out process complicates normative lifecycle issues. Adolescence, early couple-hood, and new parenting are stages particularly vulnerable to stress. LGBT people navigating these stages may experience less social supports, and therefore heightened stress.
