"Studies show that diagnostic errors occur in 10 to 30 percent of cases, and while some of these errors stem from mistakes in lab tests and mistakes made in the practitioner’s office, a doctor’s lack of the patient’s complete information is more than likely the most common cause. For the LGBT population, this translates to more than 11 million misdiagnoses annually. If you are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgendered and your doctor does not know, you are that much more likely to be misdiagnosed. Without a complete knowledge of a patient's history and personal data, we can't expect our medical professionals to treat the 'whole person.' Keeping your sexual orientation and/or gender identity a secret from your provider simply is not healthy."
